Welcome message

Dear seminar participants,
At the risk of intruding on your breaks, I thought it might be a good idea to circulate the provisional syllabus for our upcoming media theory seminar. I am still tinkering with it, but the reading for the second week is a bit long and some of you may want to read the McLuhan over the break if you haven’t already. I should note that we will make adjustments along the way; if the reading is too heavy, we can tag some of the texts as “recommended” rather than “required.”

There are two books to order: the McLuhan and Fiore and Jussi Parikka’s A Geology of Media. Otherwise I will be uploading PDFs, though you will find that there are electronic versions of some of the books, e.g. John Durham Peters’ latest, available through our library.

Our first meeting on January 7 will unfortunately have to be limited to about an hour because I have to leave town that evening for the MLA convention in Austin, but I will at least be able to give you an overview of the course and learn about your research interests.

I have been thinking of the seminar as one in a series:

They are related in the sense that each attempts to take account of the field as it appears in its respective moment, with some speculation about how critical conversations will unfold in the coming years. The description and schedule for our seminar follows. I look forward to meeting all of you in January!
